Book Review: Unwind by Neal Shusterman

5 Twisted stars!

This book. Is not perfect. Then why the 5 star? Let me tell ya. Mr. Shusterman here, is an evil genius. He's managed to create a twisted world full of twisted people  with a twisted mind and behaviour. Twisted. And I love me a twisted story. I love me a twisted characters. Call me a psycho :p

So. I think, the only thing that bothers me the most is the romance. The romance is just. Awkward. That's the best way to put it I guess. Their convos weren't awkward. It's just that the way it was developed. The next thing we know, they kissed. They just.. Kissed. And then the chapter ends abruptly. I got the impression that Shusterman didn't have much time to think about the romance plot. He focused on the whole other things. Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it was bad. In fact, it's exactly my point. I just think that the romance aspect was treated like he didn't know what else to do about it so here it goes. It would be better if there wasn't any romance at all, for me personally. (though I love to see them together they're such strong characters and they kinda complete each other.)

But HECK.

This book ROCKS. This book will change you. You will think about life. It's mind fuck, really. You will question everything. I was emotionally drained. It will touch you. You will be symphatetic toward ALL of the characters. Even for the bad guy. Just read this book it was BRILLIANT. It was so realistic that I actually think we actually live in that twisted world. This book is not just about survival. It's about love, choices, decision, compassion, moral, and any other things.

The switch between POVs did not bother me at all. It was handled so perfectly well. I know a lot of other reviewers found it annoying. But I just think that it was really necessary. And it makes us easy to understand what is going on through several POVs.

so this is basically me when reading this book.

Book Review: Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo

I was so thrilled when I heard of this book being praised by several other reviewers that I followed. I believe in you guys. and I've always wanted to read a book that was set in Russia. I always found the chilly, cold, snowy weather and the dark, gloomy background extremely exquisite. and I thought, I think imma give it a go.

Turns out.

It was not as thrilling as I had expected.
I was on Tumblr the other day and searched for Shadow & Bone, looking at some of the beautiful fan arts there and judging by the visual and quotes, I really think I might fall in LOVE this book. Just give me a good, heartfelt romance, a bunch of action here and there, solid world-building and I'll be fine. Certainly I am not that hard to please (ha-ha).

The Characters

I just CAN'T stand the heroine. She did get better towards the end, at least there was a character development, but idk I don't think I can relate to her right from the start when she talks about her 'ugly' looks all the time. why is that even an issue here? You've got another things to worry about aside from your looks, c'mon. And her interaction with Mal. I just can't see them as a romantically involved couple, ya know? It felt more like a brother and sister relationship. The kiss didn't happen up until approx. 1/4 of the book left, and when it happened I was like, "no, wait. where did that come from?" I know Alina always whined and whined about Mal ALL THE TIME, but that whining is not going anywhere near my 'believable romance' meter. All of the sudden Mal was like, "Finally, I see you, Let me kiss you."
No.

I SHIP ALINA AND THE DARKLING THO. (UGH, yes, it was a love triangle *sigh*)
Because right from the start, we get to find him rescuing her and her interactions with him is all we've got instead of Mal. We only get glimpses of their (Alina-Mal) past, when they were still kids, they only have each other crap blahblahblah so Alina loves him to death blahblah I could give a shit about that.

I was giddy with excitement everytime The Darkling uses his power oohh. I love The Darkling. I knew it from the very start I would fell for this character. I love me some dark/villain-y characters, I've always drawn to them in a weird way :3 Mal was just too boring for my liking. But there are many many others who also ship Alina-Mal so I think it's just me.

The Plot

I love how the book started up until Alina was brought to the kingdom (forgot the name). The life in the kingdom was just not so eventful and a bit dragging. it was just a series of Alina thinking she was the ugliest around, Genya the beautiful one, whining about Mal, her goddamn blue kefta, and a lots of practice of her summoning the light (Alina is apparently the sun-summoner who's going to destroy the Shadow Fold but she wasn't strong enough and in needs of an amplifier to make her stronger.) then there was the ending. it was a huge plot twist that I found myself finally squealing "finally, something happened!".

The Setting/World-building

I love love LOVE the dark and chilly Russia, it was gloomy, nice and snowy. I love the sinister feeling I got when I read a book, and this book kinda gives me that (tho I still think the action and thrills aren't enough) I don't have a problem with the world building also. Leigh Bardugo has managed to create a new world that I would love to delved into.

Overall

- so it was like this. I love the 1/3 of the book, I found the middle of the book boring and lack of action and too uneventful for my liking, and the end of the book was okay.
- I still don't like Alina for being whiny for almost the entire of the book.
- I found Mal boring and their relationship should be maintain as siblings instead of romantic couple.
- I love The Darkling.
- I love the fantasy aspect of this book.

I'll definitely look for the sequel because of The Darkling and I do hope there will be a lot of action and stuff. Fingerscrossed. I do hope it would get better because I was fairly disappointed with this one.

Channing Tatum as Gambit

Nopenopenope. This is not happening.
Gross sobbing. How could you. What have you done. He's like my fav character of all time. Don't do this to me. What is life. Suddenly the Ben Affleck as Batman news was heaven. This is too unbearable. ShiaLebouf-ing. Curl up in a ball and cry. Can't sleep.

TV series Review: Sherlock BBC Season 3 Episode 1

So. My sister has gone on and on and on about the new Sherlock this past few days and it kinda makes me go "ughh.. Okay, okay I surrender bring it on.."
Just so you know, she have already watched the show right from the BBC website on Jan 1st.. She practically sat in front of her PC, waiting for it and then watch it streaming.. Obviously she's more of a 'big fan' than me.. Probably hundreds of times 'bigger'....

So this is my thought on the new Sherlock hashtag SherlockLives hashtag YAY hashtag johnlock hashtag finallyivebeenwaitingforthisforfartoolong hashtag sherlockBBC hashtag benedictcumberbatch hashtag... Okayillshutupnowyougetthepicture.

I'll divide this post into several sections.

The Reunion

With John Watson
I need to get it out of my system... *takes a deep breath* wait for it...

IT WAS NOT. BROMANCE. IT WAS ROMANCE.

There.. I said it..

My Goodness, they didn't behave like a 'normal' friendship couple.. There's more to them goddamnit! I know that John made it perfectly clear by saying 'I am not gay', but uh... C'mon people.. I just don't know how they (Benny and Martin) did it. They both looked and acted like a real gentlemen but somehow I still can't help but sense the 'sexual' tension between them... Okay maybe 'sexual' is slightly exaggerating but I really don't know what's the correct word to describe their friendship... (Or relationship *cough* *cough*)

Anyways. Enough about the romancey thing, I'll let you judge them yourself.. All I'm saying is, THEY BOTH NAILED IT. The cafe scene was just perfect. The way  John reacted was just unbelievably felt real and just right

He had a terrible past that one could have possibly imagine.. You know, him being a soldier, the war and stuff.. That changes him in a way that could be best described as traumatic. Now that is how I'd imagined someone who's been betrayed for the past two years would've acted. It was all so believable and not made up. Basically, Martin really did shine on this episode, I'd give him that. Benedict too, didn't disappoint being the absolute arse the man he (Sherlock) is. But at the same time, we can all see that deep down he did really feel sorry towards John throughout the episode.

With Mrs. Hudson
Le Me: "My dear Mrs. Hudson, you just made my day.."

With Lestrade
Le Me: "Awww..." *sniff* *sniff*

The Cinematography

The other major thing that immediately caught my attention was the cinematography. I don't really know about TV series directors or what they usually did or their habits and all that, because you could say that I'm a newbie for that sort of things. I've always been into movies before I started moving toward TV shows. So, I don't really know what they were trying to achieve or if this really does happen to all other TV shows or whatever. It requires a lot of observations and until this time I've only watched a few. All I know is that, this felt different from its predecessors.

The Now look a bit more gritty, messy, and, shaky. Whereas the 2 previous seasons were clean, organized, beautiful and slow.

I personally prefer the first 2 seasons to this one. Though I'm not saying that this is entirely bad.. It's just a matter of taste I guess.

The Tone

Sometimes it felt like a Bond movie, sometimes Bourne, sometimes Mission Impossible. How's that for a start?
This just 'not-very-Sherlock' I guess that's the best way to put it.

At first it felt like a Bond movie, maybe because of the iconic buildings of London and it shot perfectly like the latest Bond, Skyfall, that I almost had a kind of DejaVu thing. The shot showed the back side of a man standing on the top of a building with a blaring black coat, with a gloomy weather, the only difference was the hair. (Benedict's was curly and black, in contrast, Craig's was short-cropped and blonde).

At times, it felt like Bourne. Bourne was set in Europe, not particularly London as I recall, though I think he went to London for a moment there, idk. But you get the same feeling, the shaky camera, the-feeling-what-the-protagonist-are-feeling type of shot. And the chasing by foot as well as a bike and the journey throughout the city was just Bourne-ish, me think.

And lastly, it kind of reflected the same fun feelings from the Mission Impossible movie. This is no lie, there were several scenes that seriously had me cracked up. Like really ugly kind of laugh. (Ya know the hyena kind of laugh). It's a bit creepy. But yeah. The tone of the episode is fairly different from its predecessors. The Reichenbach episode really did give us the gloomy, dark, and dreary setting and feelings whereas this one gave us such a light feeling without a very complex investigation scene involved.

Hmm what else to talk about? The characters? The plot?
There was this one scene at the beginning that shows Sherlock kissed Molly... I practically scream. Yes I really did that. I screamed "NO JUST NO JUST NO UH UH". In my honest opinion, Molly is such a sweet gal. She's kind, a bit awkward, but she always helped Sherlock in every way that she can. After all, Sherlock is an arrogant bastard without feelings, sometimes he's an arse really, but somehow, she understands him.. Maybe because she had a huge crush on him and loves him to death. There were several scenes of them together and got me think poor Molly.. Because obviously Sherlock has no feelings whatsoever toward her. For me, I personally think that Sherlock is wayyyyy too out of her league.. (*cough* because apparently I ship Sherlock-Irene *cough*). Yes she is kind but really though. I think she really has no chance to get Sherlock if her competition is Irene Adler. Not that Sherlock and Irene were romantically involved, but uh. Please, Can we really look back at what Sherlock had done in the end of the Scandal in Belgravia? Can you say FEELS? Can you say epic??? Gosh I really want them to be togethere they're like the perfect couple ever. Both intelligent both charming both witty both pretty both classy.. They're perfect for each other *dreamy sigh*

Oh and, I'm interested about the relationship between Sherlock and his brother Mycroft that seem to be developed more in this season. Mycroft was briliant I love him already! The deduction was brilliant. Apparently He's as witty (as well as an arse) as Sherlock.

I think that covers up most of it.. All in all, i think the new Sherlock has a fairly different tones as well as cinematography from its predecessors. I'm more inclined toward the first 2 seasons, but this one is not bad either. I'm looking forward to the last episode zomgasdgghjkl!!!!!?!!??!!

Movie Talk: Captain Phillips

Let me tell you a story

Months ago
Le me after seeing Cap'n Phillips trailer: Holy cow imma watch this.
Le me seeing the credits "Directed by: Paul Greengrass": ...... *stares horrificaly at the screen* nvm I think I'll pass.

Present day
Le me went to the cinema: lalalalala~ *forgotten all about Paul Greengrass*
Le me after seeing the movie: I think I'm going to be sick...

Fyi: I spent the whole 2/3 part of Green Zone with my eyes clenched shut because of the. Goddamned. Shaky camera.

Moral of the story: never watch any of the movie the guy made ever again. *except, perhaps if there's Fassy in it, I think I might reconsider*

-End of story-

P.s: the movie was really good though. Tom Hanks delivers such powerful performance.
